Jheri Curl Fridays: “Just Got Paid”

Gotta leave that 9 to 5 up on the shelf…and just enjoy yourself-Rod Temperton Look, life is stressful. Sometimes, just to maintain your sanity, you’ve got to cut loose. What’s that they say about all work and no play? Johnny Kemp perfectly captured the point in time when you can leave the stress of the work week behind and take it easy with his 1988 hit “Just Got Paid”. Written by Kemp along with super-producer Teddy Riley, Guy singer Aaron […]

Albums That Time Forgot: NKOTB’s “Face the Music”

Judging from what I remember from drunkenly Tweeting on New Year’s Eve (and into New Year’s morning), one of the main topics of discussion was the New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys performance on Dick Clark/Ryan Seacrest’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve”. It’s pretty safe to say that’s a ticket I’ll stay away from. I have no real inclination towards the Backstreet Boys’ music-it’s well-crafted but mostly forgettable, anonymous pop. When it comes to NKOTB, however, I love them despite my […]

“Michael” is the first release of unreleased material from Michael Jackson since his passing. It turns out to be a halfway decent compilation.

The “Breaking News” Saga Continues, PLUS “Michael”‘s Tracklisting Revealed

My friend Mike hipped me to this article from Idolator which contains a statement from Michael Jackson’s estate regarding the current “Breaking News” furor and tries to put a closing stamp on the argument about whether the vocals on the track really belong to Michael. Maybe I’m just […]

If you’re a fan of soul music and you’re not watching TVone’s documentary series “Unsung”, you are missing out big time. The series, which concludes its’ third season this week, spotlights artists with compelling  back stories who have not gotten their deserved props from the mainstream. The folks behind this show really do their research-almost every episode has been sit-in-front-of-the-TV-rapt good. They’ve covered everyone from Donny Hathaway and Phyllis Hyman to DeBarge and Stacy Lattisaw, and this season’s final episode […]

Don’t Judge Me: The Party

If you’re of a certain age, you remember the original Mickey Mouse Club, the show that gave us future peanut butter saleswoman Annette Funicello, right? If you’re a little younger than me, you might have fond memories of the mid-Nineties version of the Mickey Mouse Club-a show that basically served as a breeding ground for modern-day celebrities, giving us Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Keri Russell, Ryan Gosling and Matt Morris. In between those two, there was the late-Eighties/early […]
