The Viewfinder: Kanye West Releases Controversial “Monster” Video

Months after leaked versions have started to surface on Youtube, camp Kanye has officially made public his “Monster” music video. Already besieged by controversy – this video is littered with dead white women, always a sore spot for mainstream America – this spot arrives with a brand-new disclaimer, and the knowledge that you can Google a bevy of articles and petitions pleading for its demise. The clip’s divisiveness can be discussed in the comments, of course; but quality is king, […]

The Viewfinder: Kanye West “All of the Lights”

So, um…what happened to the “Monster” video? A rough cut of the clip was floating around the net a month or so ago, but there was never an official release. Did “Monster” just not gain traction on the radio? Was the internet chatter about the video’s alleged misogyny enough to kill the video? (I don’t see that happening, but ya never know). Did the mercurial Kanye just have a change of heart? Who knows? At any rate, the third video […]

Village Voice Pazz & Jop Goes Gaga Over Kanye

Music tastemakers of a certain vintage still go crazy over The Village Voice‘s annual Pazz & Jop poll. The poll asks a who’s who of music critics for their favorites in music over the previous year. The results for 2010 were published recently, and Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was voted the best album of 2010 by a landslide, receiving almost double the votes of the runner-up, LCD Soundsystem’s This is Happening. Yeezy then ran roughshod over the […]

Spin Cycle: “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” by Kanye West

It’s one thing to not like Kanye West’s music. I’m a reasonable guy, and I don’t expect everyone to like everything. I can even understand if you’re not a fan of hip-hop. Well, I can’t understand it, but I can give you a pass. However, it unnerves the hell out of me when people criticize Kanye’s art based on his public persona-especially when all they know of him is maybe the four or five songs they hear on the radio […]

New Release Report 11/22/10: Well, Hello Kanye

The week before Thanksgiving is typically the week that record companies bring out their big guns. There will be quite a few major records battling for chart supremacy this week, and most of them will have a 24-hour jump on the average music release, since many of the albums are being made available for sale on Monday instead of Tuesday. Here’s what you should be looking for: Kanye West “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”– Kanye’s fifth album has been met […]

Hear Here!: “The Joy” by Kanye West (and Friends)

Another week, another Kanye tune. The latest track is entitled “The Joy”. One thing I’m starting to get a little concerned about is that many of the tracks that have surfaced recently are a bit overstuffed with guests. Case in point: “Joy” is credited as co-starring Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Charlie Wilson, Pete Rock and Curtis Mayfield. Can’t we just call this a Kanye and Jay record? Mayfield (obviously) appears via sample, while Uncle Charlie’s contribution is brief and negligible. Cudi’s […]
