The Top 40 Emcees of All Time: #15-#11

Sorry for a bit of a break from the countdown, I was taking care of some business in my old stomping grounds and hip-hop’s birthplace. I hope you’ve been enjoying the series so far. Check out past entries that you may have missed: 16-20 21-25 26-30 31-35 36-40 15. Ghostface Killah Representing: Staten Island Can you name anything good that has come out of Staten Island other than the Wu-Tang Clan? Consider the fact that I lived in New York City for almost thirty years […]

Popblerd! Presents: The Top 40 Albums of 2010 (15-11)

Before you move forward, make sure you check out the albums that have appeared on this list so far!! 16-20 25-21 30-26 35-31 40-36 Now we can move forward… 15. Of Montreal, False Priest (Polyvinyl) Crazy, crazy shit. Of Montreal’s latest album sounds like “Sign o’ the Times”-era Prince meeting Frank Zappa in a dark alley and taking lots and lots (and lots) of drugs. With assistance from left-leaning R&B vocalists like Solange and Janelle Monae, the indie-rock collective made 2010’s most delightfully eclectic album. […]

Spin Cycle: Cee-Lo’s “The Lady Killer”

Talk about unsung. For fifteen years, Cee-Lo has stood on the precipice of stardom, and he’s actually gotten there a time or two. Still, the guy’s nowhere as appreciated as he should be. He’s a great songwriter (do you know he wrote “Don’t ‘Cha” for The Pussycat Dolls?..OK, maybe that’s not the best example of great songwriting), he’s an intense singer (a throwback to the gospel-influenced vocalists of yore) and to top things off, he’s a top-shelf emcee. With all […]

New Release Report 11/9/10: Cee-Lo, Kid Cudi, SuBo and More!

A couple of titles that have had their release dates shuffled around more than a deck of cards finally see the light today, led by Cee-Lo Green’s “The Lady Killa”. The long-awaited third solo effort from the Goodie Mob/Gnarls Barkley member has received some pretty solid reviews so far. If it’s anything like first single “Fuck You” or his cover of Band of Horses’ “No One’s Gonna Love You”, then I’m all over this one. Cee-Lo hasn’t disappointed me yet. […]

Hear Here! Cee-Lo Green Covers Kings of Leon’s “Radioactive”

Cee-Lo covering Southern rock is something that should happen more often. First, the singer/rapper covered Band of Horses’ “No One’s Gonna Love You”. The bearded troubadours then returned the favor by taking on ‘Lo’s “Georgia”. Now, on the eve of his third solo release “The Lady Killer”, Cee-Lo has blessed us with his version of Kings of Leon’s current smash single “Radioactive”. It’s not as good as the original, which I’m still ridiculously in love with, but the man more […]

Heading Down to “Georgia” with Band of Horses

Band of Horses just might be my favorite discovery of 2010. The Seattle band’s latest album, “Infinite Arms”, fuses Southern rock with sweeping orchestration and harmonies so tight they make the hair on my (not-exactly-infinite) arms stand up. I got the chance to catch them at an intimate record store performance two days before “Arms”, and I was blown away. BoH and Cee-Lo have been doing the Mutual Admiration Society thing for a couple of months now. The former Gnarls […]

Fuck!! Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You” Video is So Fuckin’ Good!!

I assume that if you’re easily offended by so-called “dirty” words, then you’re not a regular here anyway. Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You” song has blown the hell up over the internets, going viral within minutes of it popping up on the airwaves. Despite the fact that some tricky editing is gonna have to take place in order to make this song radio friendly, it’s already created a helluva lot of awareness for Lo’s upcoming “Lady Killer” album, which is scheduled to […]

My New Favorite Song: Cee-Lo Green’s “Fuck You”

Cee-Lo is kinda sorta one of music’s best kept secrets. Starting out as the nimble-tongued rapper/singer of Atlanta hip-hoppers Goodie Mob (and an obvious musical and sartorial influence on OutKast’s Andre 3000) and progressing through two excellent (though unheralded) solo albums through his brief turn in the pop sunshine as 1/2 of Gnarls Barkley, my man has been bringing heat for over fifteen years. And I think he has just recorded and released my favorite song of the year. Sure, […]
