Spin Cycle: The Darkness, Hot Cakes

Almost a decade after Permission to Land and “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”, The Darkness once again rock out with their collective cock out. Popblerd reviews “Hot Cakes”.

bLISTerd Presents: The Top 100 Albums of The Eighties (30-21)

bLISTerd Presents: The Top 100 Albums of The Eighties (30-21)

Our latest installment of the ’80s best albums includes The Boss (twice,) The Cure, and pop/soul icon George Michael. We still have “Faith.”

Spin Cycle: Puddle of Mudd’s “Re:(disc)overed” // Powerman 5000’s “Copies, Clones & Replicants”

Almost universally maligned as a once-relevant band’s career-twilight last-ditch stab at relevancy, the all-covers album more often than not allows a bereft-of-inspiration artist to court a last gasp of sweet, sweet mainstream success by promising songs the listener already knows and loves, and not those pesky tepid originals that said artist has been peddling for the past twenty years or so to increasingly-diminishing returns. And all under the guise of “paying tribute to our idols, man”. Seems like, to court […]

The Blerd Playlist: “I Feel The Earth Move (Songs For Earthquakes)”

As most of you know, the East Coast was rocked today by a seismic, 5.8 earthquake that caused chairs to fall over, cats to become briefly startled, and a rash of hasty, terrified status updates. As most of the Blerd staff is located in the Northeast – with the exception of our Californian contributors, who regard earthquakes with the same concern as a hearty fart – we were notably shaken by this disaster. In remembrance of those who were lost […]

bLISTerd: Happy Anniversary MTV!! The Top 50 Videos of the Eighties

Turns out that the revolution WOULD be televised. The musical revolution, that is. On August 1st, 1981, MTV was launched. It was the first TV channel to devote itself exclusively to music videos. When it debuted (with The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star”), I don’t think anyone had the slightest idea that MTV would turn into the cultural phenomenon it became.  Within a few short years, the video age began. The era of the faceless, unphotogenic rock star was […]

Another Billboard Nail-Biter: Chart Stalker! 9/30/10

In the red corner, an upstart country band who won the 2009 Grammy for Best New Artist. Representing for the peeps who like a little bit of Jack Johnson with their Kenny Chesney, we have…the Zac Brown Band! In the blue corner, a group of funk/rock pros whose lead singer has finely chiseled cheekbones and unbelievably sculpted hair! The Grammy winner for Best New Artist of 2004…Maroon 5!! It was a close race for the top of the Billboard charts […]

Chart Chat 7/7/10: Mid-Year Report

Surprising no one, Eminem’s “Recovery” maintains a second week on top of Billboard’s album chart. Perhaps surprising some folks, “Recovery” experiences a less steep second-week decline than usual, moving a still healthy 313,000 units. This vaults it over the million sold mark in only 2 weeks. It is only the fifth album in 2010 to cross the million-sold threshold. Beginning a series of quiet weeks in the music industry, the highest debut is the third effort from R&B singer/songwriter The-Dream. […]

Chartstalker 4/30/10: Positively "Glee"-Ful

WordPress tells me that my top search term of the day is “Chelsea Lately Sex Tape”. This is weird, because I don’t think I’ve ever written about Chelsea Lately or a sex tape. Anyway, I’m gonna use that as a tag just to see how many more hits I get. However, this column isn’t about search results, either! It’s about the Billboard charts and the fact that the “Glee: Power of Madonna” album enters the Album chart at #1, selling […]

The New Release Report 4/20/10: DWI (Divas with Issues)

There’s not too many things I like more than damaged people. I guess people who are damaged but try to act like they aren’t kinda piss me off, but people who revel in their damaged-ness? That’s my kinda party. I won’t go into detail about Shelby Lynne and her troubles on this page. I will say that I’m madly in love with her, and that love was reinforced when I met her backstage after a concert a few years ago […]
