I’ve always liked Jazmine Sullivan without really having any kind of allegiance to her. I have her first two albums, like some songs, don’t like some others. She’s always struck me as a good voice only sometimes capable of making good music.

Maybe it’s the R&B drought that seems to have taken place over the last couple of years. Maybe it’s the break Jazmine has taken the past few years (in which she’s publicly contemplated retirement.) Maybe the stars are just aligned right, because after hearing Jazmine’s new single “Forever Don’t Last,” I’m ready to camp out in front of the record store until her upcoming Reality Show album comes out.

“Forever” hits all the sweet spots…great lyrics, sympathetic musicianship, and a vocal that makes those tiny hairs on the back of your neck stand up. I won’t speculate on the song’s commercial prospects-radio seems frighteningly indifferent to black voices that don’t rap these days-but if I was a programmer, I’d be rocking this song repeatedly. I’m sure some of you will feel the same…at least I hope some of you will.
