It’s early in the morning. Journalists are nursing their styrofoam coffee cups, awkwardly fidgeting in their theater chairs and awaiting for the inevitably lackluster announcement of the 84th Academy Awards nominations. Academy President Tom Sherak did his best at stuttering through the names of foreign directors and producers. Jennifer Lawrence did her best at looking at the camera with a seductive allure that made me temporarily overlook her shoddy performance in “X-Men: First Class”. The announcements were brief and without much fanfare. “The Artist” had a strong outing, which was to be expected. In fact, there weren’t really any surprises (save for “The Adventures of Tintin” not being nominated for best animated picture and the inclusion of “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” in the best picture nods). The most egregious oversight by the Academy was the blatant disregard for my favorite film of 2011, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive.” In spite of the Academy’s penchant for rewarding stylized violent films in the past, “Drive” flew below the radar this year and will most likely be 2011’s most under-appreciated film. Also, where was “Melancholia”? The Academy probably didn’t appreciate Lars von Trier’s antisemitic “jokes” he made earlier this year. But hell, that’s just my opinion.
