As much as the exploitation of dead artists by their record companies bothers me, you can bet your sweet bippy that I will be parking my ass in a record store when Amy Winehouse’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures comes out on December 6th. Attribute it to the tremendous goodwill she engendered with Back To Black, an album that’s essentially flawless. I refuse to believe that there isn’t some more top-shelf material hidden in there…

…like this cover of “Our Day Will Come”, which was a #1 hit in 1963 for Ruby and The Romantics. Amy gives the song a bit of a reggae feel (same as with her stellar cover of Sam Cooke’s “Cupid”-I wouldn’t be surprised if the two songs were recorded at the same time) and delivers it with a passionate but light-spirited vocal. Top notch stuff. And the video, as you would expect, is heartbreaking. Despite her demons (and drug or alcohol addiction is one of those things where I have to pull the “let he without sin…” card), she appeared (by all accounts) to have a wonderful, sensitive spirit and let’s face it, she was talented as fuck. Musically, the world lost a gem.
