Something tells me you’re going to be seeing this headline a LOT in the next six months or so.

British singer Adele leads the pack in nominations for the 2011 American Music Awards, which will air live on ABC Sunday November 20th. She’s followed by Taylor Swift and Rihanna, who scored three nominations apiece.

As I’m sure you know, Adele’s 21 is by far 2011’s biggest selling album (and let’s face it, no one’s gonna catch it, either) and has already spawned two #1 singles. It’s expected to clean up at the Grammy Awards next year-but nominations for that won’t be announced until December, so we’re gonna have to wait on that one.

Unlike The Grammys, for which the nominations and winners are chosen by music industry professionals, the American Music Awards nominations are chosen by combining Soundscan data with airplay info from Radio & Records magazine. This explains why ‘N Sync and New Kids on the Block have American Music Awards and not Grammys. Lately, the winners of AMAs have been chosen by fans online, and they’ve offered a new wrinkle this year. You get to choose who the final nominees for the New Artist of the Year award are. Head on over to the American Music Awards website and cast your vote to see who moves on to the next round-and final list of nominations. Your options include recent “SNL” guests Foster the People, R&B lothario Miguel, stoner rapper Wiz Khalifa, mindless dance-poppers LMFAO, neo-soul diva Marsha Ambrosius, country acts Thompson Square and The Band Perry, and “Tonight Tonight” hitmakers Hot Chelle Rae.
