Beyonce Knowles-Carter definitely has two things going for her. 1) She can sing (and no one can really dispute that) and 2) She is foine. With that said, there’s definitely a disconnect when it comes to the way I feel about her from a talent appreciation standpoint. I’m not sure if it’s because of the various times her songwriting ability has been called into question. Maybe it’s the fact that often times her pretty voice disguises the fact that she very rarely bites into a song and gives it real soul. Maybe it’s the fake vibe I get from her. However you slice it, I think she’s hella overrated (“Single Ladies”-song of the year? I think that might have torn apart the last shred of respect I had for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) but for some reason I always find myself at the record store buying her albums on the day they come out. And then I take them home and get pissed at myself for spending money on mediocrity.
Anyway-yeah, so B’s got a new video out called “Why Don’t You Love Me”. I’m not sure if this means she has a new album coming out or something-it feels like “I Am…Sasha Fierce” just came out yesterday, so that’s a pretty quick turnaround. Then again, Beyonce’s albums don’t exactly come off as labor-intensive from a quality control POV. The video’s interesting and kooky, moreso than any of her previous videos have been. The song itself is “meh”. Maybe a step above outtake status. I don’t dislike it, but I don’t feel as though I’ll be running back to view it again anytime soon. And the part with her dusting off her Grammys is kinda lame and unnecessary. It’s also hard not to imagine that the “kookiness” of this video was at least somewhat influenced by her Lady GaGa collaboration on “Telephone”. Thoughts?

*Yawn!*
I dunno, man. The problem I have with Beyonce is the same problem I have with Alicia Keys: She doesn’t move me. The music, the costumes, even the tantalizing dances…it’s not that she’s completely bereft of talent, but the soul is lacking.
And yeah, ever since the ascendancy of Lady GaGa, it just seems she’s been trying to get on that bandwagon — and this video confirms it for me.

Keys has made strides on the “soul” front. Beyonce needs to catch up.

Beyonce has been in the public eye for close to 15 years now and I still have little idea who she is as a person. Yes she’s talented but how much input does she have in her own career?
The fact that Beyonce has 16 Grammies sitting on her shelf while Diana Ross has zero is an embarrassment to the music industry.
The song seems like a dud to me, although it seems to be getting a lot of play in the clubs.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.
